Did you know that between 30 and 60 kg of fresh melon are needed to obtain 1kg of Melofeed? The melon season is in full swing in the area of Cavaillon, in Provence, and it was the perfect time for our team and some customers to learn more about the production of Melofeed, our melon concentrate product naturally rich in superoxide dismutase (SOD).
It started with a trip to the melon fields, where the special variety of melon rich in SOD, Cucumis melo L., is grown and where our team finds out from the expert Mr Christian Yard from Bionov some tips on selecting the tastiest melons. Participants could taste the Cucumis melo L. variety, which they found out to be “surprisingly tasty, but with a firmer flesh than usual melons, due to the high antioxidant content.” It was followed by a visit of the SOD B production plant where the fresh melons undergo a specific process to concentrate the SOD-rich pulp and protect its antioxidant power through a specific coating. The melon SOD concentrate or SOD B is used in nutraceutical, functional food and cosmetics by Bionov while Lallemand Animal Nutrition is the exclusive distributor for animal feed applications, with extensive research programs into its applications and modes of action in ruminants, poultry, swine, aqua and pet food.
