Evaluation of Live Yeast on Training Horse Digestibility

Live yeast improves fiber degradation in training horses with positive impact on maintaining optimal body condition

A new equine nutrition study was recently presented by Lallemand Animal Nutrition at the 68th Annual Meeting of the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP), in Tallinn, Estonia. The poster1, titled “Evaluation of Live Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM l-1077 on Training Horse Digestibility,” confirms previous findings with probiotic yeast S. cerevisiae CNCM l-1077 (LEVUCELL SC), showing benefits on horse feed digestion and nutrient utilization, with positive impacts on maintaining optimal body conditions of training gallopers.

A practical method to evaluate equine digestion efficacy

Training, transportation, and also modern feeding practices can all represent stressors for the horse’s digestive microbiota. Digestion is not easily or routinely investigated in horses. A simple method was previously described, based on droppings visual evaluation (color and consistency scales), pH and particle size (2-grids sieve system – 5mm Ø and 2mm Ø – and evaluation of F1 and F2 fractions) as a simple and practical tool to evaluate horse digestibility and intestinal health (Le Treut & Sacy, AVEF, 2011).

Using this method, a trial was conducted in France in partnership with Lencare on 5 gallopers during 8 weeks in order to evaluate the effect of the live yeast strain S. cerevisiae CNCM l-1077 on ration digestibility (concentrate feed). In addition, the animals’ body condition score (BCS) was also evaluated.

 

Improved digestion and body condition

After two months of supplementation, the trial shows that the live yeast S. cerevisiae CNCM l-1077 decreased the part of non-digested fractions of the diet: the ratio of the two fractions F1(coarse)/F2(fine) was significantly improved (before: 4.09, after: 2.01, P < 0.05).

As a result, the horses’ body condition score was significantly improved (before: 1.40, after: 2.20, P < 0.05). In addition, the fecal pH, color and firmness were constant during the trial and indicative of good intestinal health for these training horses.

This study highlights the beneficial effect of the live yeast S. cerevisiae CNCM l-1077 on ration digestibility and better usage of nutrients in horses, as indicated by improved body condition (+0.8 body condition score).
