New insights on shrimp microbiota presented at Aqua Expo 2023 in Ecuador

This week at the Aqua Expo 2023 event in Guayaquil, Ecuador, François Cellier, Aquaculture Technical Manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition presented a study on strategies to modulate shrimp microbial ecosystems.

Shrimp hatcheries, nurseries and grow out ponds are semi-closed systems. In such conditions, opportunistic and pathogen bacteria may bloom, organic matter can accumulate, and toxic inorganic nitrogen forms can build up. Dedicated microbial solutions like bioremediation, biocontrol and in-feed probiotic can be used to help limit the risks of environmental parameters deviation, loss of performance and good health status during shrimp farming. However, the impacts of such microbial inputs are often difficult to appreciate due to the complexity of the microbial interactions at play and of the analytical methods needed to decipher them.

This study gives an example of how new technologies can help our understanding of the microbial interactions and the impacts of bioremediation and probiotic bacteria in shrimp culture.
