Expert interview: Bruno Bertaud on kinetics of protein digestion

Bruno Bertaud is Global Swine Technical Manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition

Tell us more about kinetics of protein digestion

The kinetics of protein digestion is crucial, especially for the immature piglet around weaning. It refers to the speed at which proteins are broken down and absorbed by the body. The faster and more efficiently this process occurs, the better it is for the piglet’s growth and health.

What challenges do piglets face during weaning?

Weaning is a critical period for piglets. Their digestive system is still developing, and they need proteins that are easily digestible and quickly absorbed. If not, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies and health issues.

What is the difference between protein digestibility and kinetics of protein digestion?

The protein digestibility of feed ingredients is an important parameter for nutritionists, qualifying the global protein bioavailability of a raw material. However, it does not express the ‘timing of absorption’ in the gastrointestinal tract which is what the kinetic does. The kinetic of protein digestion should, therefore, be considered in addition to protein digestibility.

A diagram illustrating the kinetics of protein digestion through different sections of the digestive tract, from the esophagus to the large intestine. It uses color-coded arrows to represent digestion speed: "FLASH" (green) in the stomach, "FAST" (yellow) in the small intestine, "SLOW" (orange) in the cecum, and "RESISTANT" (red) in the large intestine. A gradient bar on the right visually indicates the decreasing speed of digestion.

What are the risks of slow protein digestion?

If proteins are not digested quickly enough, they can reach the large intestine undigested. This is where proteolytic fermentations occur, as the gut microbiota starts breaking down these proteins. Excessive proteolytic fermentations can be harmful. They can lead to the production of harmful metabolites, such as biogenic amines and ammonia. These substances can damage the gut barrier and negatively impact the overall health of the piglets. It can also lead to poor growth performance and increased susceptibility to diseases.

How does YELA PROSECUCRE help?

YELA PROSECURE is a new hydrolyzed yeast that contains a high level of free amino acids and small peptides. It has been designed to be easily and quickly absorbed, reducing the amount of undigested protein reaching the large intestine. By improving the kinetics of protein digestion, we can limit proteolytic fermentations and the associated risks, supporting the overall gut health and well-being of the piglets.

Does YELA PROSECURE contain other functional nutrients?

In addition to being a source of highly digestible proteins, YELA PROSECURE contains highly potentially fermentable and functional dietary fibers, vitamins and minerals. These dietary fibers are not just a source of energy for the piglet. They also support gut health and contribute to the overall well-being of the piglet. This combination of digestible proteins, functional dietary fibers and micronutrients makes YELA PROSECURE a comprehensive and effective nutritional solution.

A diagram highlighting the composition and benefits of YELA PROSECURE. It shows that the product contains 42% functional proteins (high in free amino acids and small peptides), 38-40% functional dietary fibers, and 18% vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. The left side emphasizes high digestibility and rapid protein absorption ("FLASH and FAST") after the stomach, while the right side illustrates the progressive release of energy in the hindgut.
