Addressing shrimp production challenges with microbial solutions and management changes

In December 2022, the Lallemand Animal Nutrition aquaculture team and a local distributor held a series of five technical seminars in Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico, for shrimp farmers and feed manufacturers. This was a great opportunity to discuss the use of microbial-based solutions to address the challenges of shrimp farming, as illustrated by practical farm cases shared by local shrimp farmer, Ramon Cota, Farm Technical Support Manager.

Cota talked about his farm’s success using novel management approaches, including Lallemand microbial-based solutions.

He changed his management practices and improved production by using specific microbial-based solutions from Lallemand: Bactocell, YANG and Lalsea Biorem. Cota estimates the recent cycle’s success can be attributed to 70% new management practices and 30% thanks to microbial solutions.

With his former protocol, performance met benchmarks for the area. After incorporating Lallemand Animal Nutrition products across four cycles in 2021 and 2022, he reported:

  • An average increase of 18% in overall shrimp survival rate
  • An increase of 0.2g/week/animal
  • Superior productivity of 805kg/ha/cycle compared to the zone.

Cota concluded: «With our previous protocol, results were variable between cycles. Now, in association with good management, Lallemand products help to ensure economic performance.»
