New data presented at ESPN shows our range of microbial solutions benefits all poultry types

New data was presented to the international poultry community at the 22nd European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN) in Gdańsk, Poland. Three presentations from Lallemand Animal Nutrition demonstrated the benefits of a complete range of microbial solutions — from bacteria and yeasts to live probiotics and yeast derivatives — for the improvement of performance and the well-being of broilers and layers.
Probiotic P. acidilactici improves layer feed efficiency
A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of nutrient density and Pediococcus acidilactici MA 18/5M supplementation on layer performance.2 A 100 kcal/kg energy density reduction was tested, and the zootechnical results indicated the probiotic diet tended to compensate for the effect of energy dilution on performance. The new findings of the effect of P. acidilactici MA 18/5M on dietary nutrient utilization establish that probiotic is another tool to manage feed costs in poultry production.
Vanessa Demey, Applied R&D Project Leader and supervisor of the trial, comments: “As expected, the probiotic improves laying performance with a standard energy diet. New insight from that trial is that the layers receiving probiotic supplementation and a reduced-energy diet had bio-equivalent* performance compared to the standard energy diet.”
*Bio-equivalence has been defined by EFSA in 2018: if two products are said to be bioequivalent it means that they would be expected to be, for all relevant effects, the same.
S. boulardii optimizes broiler growth performance as well as food safety
The live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 is authorized in Europe for the reduction of carcass contamination by Salmonella spp. in broiler chickens. In addition to food safety benefits, the probiotic exerts positive effects on broiler performance. A field trial encompassing 11 commercial broiler buildings was conducted to evaluate the effect of this live yeast on the performance of broiler chickens reared under commercial conditions.2 Five buildings were used as a control while the chickens in the other six buildings received the same feed supplemented with the live yeast. The study concluded that the addition of the live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 to broiler chicken feed benefits animals:
- European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF): +33 points (P<0.05)
- Average daily gain: +4.5%, equivalent to 3 g/day (P<0.05)
- Mortality decreased from 4.0% to 2.4%
Yeast MOS improves broiler performance by at least 3%
A multi-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of a specific yeast mannan oligosaccharide product (AGRIMOS) on broiler performance.3 AGRIMOS is a consistent and high-quality MOS source obtained from yeast cells grown through a specific process. The multi-analysis shows a beneficial effect of this specific MOS source on the performance of broiler chickens, including average daily gain and feed conversion rates were significantly improved by 3%.
