A biofilm is a structured community of microorganisms attached to a surface and enclosed in a self-produced polymer matrix (adapted from Costerton et al., 1999).
A biofilm can be formed by beneficial or undesirable bacteria.
It is estimated that 90% of world microbial biomass is in biofilm form.
Strength of bacteria as a biofilm:
Bacteria in a biofilm form are 10 to 1,000 times more resistant to antimicrobials (disinfectants, antibiotics) compared to isolated bacteria (Briandet et al., 2012).
Biofilms of pathogenic bacteria are increasingly difficult to control.
Uncontrolled farm building biofilms = increased risk of contamination of the animals by undesirable bacteria.
After building surfaces are disinfected, they can be colonized by remaining bacteria or opportunistic bacteria
that come from the animals or environment.
Positive biofilm development
12 hours after application, the protective biofilm is mature, and ready for entry of the animals.
Lalfilm PRO is a water dispersible powder for dilution and is applied using a low pressure spraying device. All internal building surfaces should be covered including floors, walls, ceilings and animal housing equipment (pens, feeders, etc.).
Lalfilm PRO is produced by Lallemand Animal Nutrition under the highest quality control standards.
The product is packaged in a 100g aluminum sachet to guarantee shelf-life. Lalfilm PRO can be kept for 24 months from date of production when stored in a cool and dry place in its original unopened packaging.
