Alleviate the impact of live coccidiosis vaccines on broiler performance using microbial-based strategies

Lallemand Animal Nutrition will present a new study at the 6th International Poultry Meat Congress in Antalya, Turkey, March 1-5, 2023. The study demonstrates the potential of its unique natural microbiota product for avian species, AVIGUARD, and yeast cell wall solution, OPTIWALL, to preserve broiler performance despite live coccidiosis vaccine.1 Lallemand Animal Nutrition will have a team of poultry experts at booth 13 to answer specific questions about the study and its solutions.

Viable approaches to mitigate the negative effects of coccidiosis vaccine

Live coccidiosis vaccines are increasingly used as a strategy to help reduce antimicrobial usage. However, growing evidence reports negative impacts of the vaccines on zootechnical performance. The study presented explored innovative microbial-based strategies to mitigate the negative effects of coccidiosis vaccines on performance in broilers, by:

  1. Using a competitive exclusion product (AVIGUARD, a unique natural microbiota product for avian species) on the first day of life
  2. Supplementing broiler feed with a novel yeast cell wall ingredient, OPTIWALL, during the production cycle.

The study confirmed the impact of live coccidiosis vaccines on growing performance.

Both microbial-based approaches were effective in mitigating the negative effects of the vaccination, with results similar to those in non-vaccinated birds. Moreover, microbial-based strategies did not alter the mode of action of the live vaccine, thus its expected efficiency.

Eric Chevaux, Lallemand Animal Nutrition Global Applied R&D Manager, who presented the study, concludes that: “Both strategies are compatible with coccidiosis vaccines and could turn out to be viable solutions to alleviate the negative effects of coccidiosis vaccines on broiler performance.”

Attend Eric Chevaux’s presentation on Friday, March 3, between 12:00-12:10 local time.
